Finally nation’s blessing came true and veteran actor Dilip Kumar was discharged from hospital after doctors declared him healthy. The 90-year-old thespian was admitted to hospital last Sunday (September 15, 2013), at the Lilavati Hospital after having a myocardial infarction (heart attack). He was kept in the intensive care unit (ICU) for ten days and had undergone a heart surgery. “He is better and hence it was decided to take him home,” sources close to the actor reported.

Originally named as Muhammad Yusuf Khan, he has adopted the film name of Dilip Kumar.  He debuted as an actor in the film Jwar Bhata in 1944 and his last film was Qila in 1998. In a career spanning over six decades, Dilip Kumar donned a variety of roles including romantic, drama, comedy and socio-historic.

He was crowned as the Tragedy King of Bollywood for playing a doomed lover on screen in Devdas, Madhumati and Ganga Jamuna. He is also acclaimed for films like Naya Daur, Mughal-e-Azam, Ram Shyam, Kranti, Mashaal, Baabul and Jogan.

Married to Bollywood actress Saira Banu, Dilip Kumar was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema. Also, he was awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, the highest civilian award conferred by the government of Pakistan in 1998.
